Requirements:
1. Students must register for Professor Calle's WebCT MUM 2030 course. Please visit this link for instructions. Assignments, announcements and e-mails will be posted on WebCt, Angel, and also at www.ProfessorCalle.com/mum2030.html.
2. Students must have a valid E-mail account and access to the World Wide Web.
3. Students must supply a 3-ring binder ranging between 1 and 3 inches in width and at least one set of 100, top loading, non-glare, non-stick, plastic sheet protectors. You may find these at Office Depot, Office Max or any school supply store.
4. Students must download your music from www.ProfessorCalle.com/mum2030.html and keep your book in numerical order. If you do not have your music with you for rehearsal or performance, you will earn an F for that class meeting or performance.

Attendance: All rehearsals, performances and recordings are mandatory. Flexibility is available when important conflicts due to work, school or family issues arise. Students, this class is flat out fun and a chance to perform publicly.

Assignments/Projects: You must learn your parts, come to class, participate and attend every rehearsal and performance. In addition, you are encouraged to research the original or classic recordings of all music performed. These recordings are available on the Macintosh computer in the Music Business and Production Office at the Kendall Campus located in room 8213. Additionally, this music will be posted on the server in Kendall's room M-335 and selected servers at the North, Wolfson, Hialeah, Medical, Homestead, EEC and West Kendall campuses.

Repertoire & Solos: Professor Calle will approve and determine the repertoire, sequence, programming, arrangements, stylistic interpretation and soloists for each and every song in the repertoire. When necessary, Professor Calle will assign the soloists for each song. In the event that more than one student wants to perform a specific song or someone wants to challenge another soloist for a song, the professor may hold auditions in order to determine the soloist. Please note that being a member of the group does not guarantee a solo opportunity. In most cases, everyone gets an opportunity to be featured. As Phil Ramone always says, “please check your egos at the door.”

Due to the popularity and size of the group, students will find flexibility and patience most valuable assests. Drummers and singersare encouraged to learn to play a variety of Latin percussion instruments. Singers are encouraged to bring acoustic guitars or hand percussion instruments and become competent instrumentalists in addition to outstanding singers. Horn players are encouraged to learn background vocal parts and additionally bring doub les such as woodwinds or flugelhorns in addition to hand percussion instruments. All members of the ensemble are encouraged to study the piano in order to play additional keyboard supporting parts such as strings and pads. Most importantly, all participants are encouraged to supply arrangements, transcriptions or compositions to add to the groups repertpoire. Please keep in mind that everyone must have a part to play. Inclusion is the purpose of ensemble performance.

RULES: This course is a fun class where students learn to perform various styles of popular music. We rarely have issues with regards to egos. Unfortunately, some students don’t understand the ensemble concept. Due to this lack of understanding, I have been forced to enforce the following rules:

1. Professor Calle decides who sings or plays what song and what music is performed. No questions asked.
2. No vulgar lyrics, or music demeaning to women or people including hip-hop or rap will be tolerated, taught or performed in the ensemble ever, for any reason, no matter what. Let me be clear - NONE, ZERO, ZIP, EVER!!!!!! REALLY – NO VULGAR OR DEAMEANING RAP OR HIP-HOP!
3. At performances, Professor Calle will attempt to feature everyone. Since this is not always possible, the professor will decide on the set list.
4. Students who do not learn their parts will loose their solos.
5. All students are required to participate in the group’s rehearsals, performances and recordings. No student will be asked to miss work in order to attend an ensemble concert or recording. Professor Calle is very understanding in cases of family, school or work related conflicts.
6. Noodling, simply defined as improvising, jamming, practicing or playing out of turn while others are singing or playing, is absolutely prohibited. If you noodle, you will earn an F for that particular class. The third time you are asked to stop noodling you will fail the class. Noodling is rude, unmusical, ignorant, disrespectful, annoying, and absolutely forbidden. DON’T NOODLE – EVER.
7. Everyone is responsible for setup and striking the equipment they use. Singers and horn players will be responsible for the microphones, stands and P.A.. Rhythm section students are responsible for their gear.
8. Professor Calle is not your roadie. Do not ask Professor Calle to bring your stands, amps or other equipment to a rehearsal, performance or recording under any circumstance. The equipment you use is your responsibility.
9. Always conduct yourself as a professional musician. Practice your parts, show up on time and come ready to make music. Professor Calle works very hard to make this ensemble one of the most educational and enjoyable musical experiences of your life.

Grading: Your grade is based on your participation. If you participate and treat everyone with respect, you earn an A. If you don’t, you earn a D or an F.  Grading scales are based on performance, participation and attendance. These grade scales value effort and attitude infinitely more than talent and are as follows:
A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F = 0 - 59

Objectives:

1. Learn to perform many different styles of popular music in the correct style.
2. Improve musical skills including but not limited to sight-reading, intonation, blend, rhythmic precision, harmony, melody, ensemble playing, soloing, arranging, rehearsing techniques, ear-training, stage presence, basic audio setup, microphone techniques, recording studio skills and light choreography.
3. Record a variety of selections and/or musical examples.
4. Represent MDC in the most musical and professional way possible.
5. Learn to work with others under pressure and sometimes in less than ideal musical situations.
6. To expand your musical vocabulary and repertoire.
   

PLEASE COME TO CLASS AND HAVE FUN. THE ENSEMBLE IS MADE UP OF A GREAT GROUP OF STUDENTS WHO LOVE MUSIC AND ARE HELPFUL AND RESPECTFUL OF EVERYONE REGARDLESS OF EXPERIENCE OR ABILITY. EVERYONE GETS A CHANCE TO SING A SOLO AND BE A PART OF WONDERFUL ENSEMBLE. THIS MAY BE THE MOST FUN YOU EVER HAVE IN SCHOOL – REALLY:)
