Course Competencies
MUM 2704 Course description:
This course will provide an overview, and hands-on experience, with computer-based
music technology and cross-platform software applications used within the
Music Business environment. Software studies include Adobe Photoshop, Adobe
PageMaker (page layout), Quicken (financial record keeping), and Adobe PageMill
(Web page development). Students will create their own Web site, useful for
promotion and networking in their own Music Business enterprises. Students
will present projects in class. Special fee. Prerequisite: MUM 2703. (6 hr.
lab)
Course competencies:
- Students will design a business logo, for Trademark purposes, using Adobe
Photoshop.
- Students will create a digital business proposal or presentation using
Microsoft Powerpoint.
- Students will convert images into various file formats including but not
limited to tiff, jpeg and pict. Students will learn to resize, edit, copy
and insert these files into various documents.
- Students will scan a picture to create a professional headshot with contact
information included using Adobe Photoshop.
- Students will create a promotional flyer or advertisement using Photoshop.
- Students will create a digital presentation using AppleÕs iPicture and
iMovie software.
- Students will locate and download drum loops and import them into an Apple
GarageBand software or Digidesign Pro Tools software file. Students will
learn to edit, copy and paste loops in order to create a complete drum performance
using loops.
- Students will create telephone ring-tones using MIDI software and Apple
Quicktime software.
- Students will create an artist, manager or producer portfolio using Microsoft
Word, Adobe Photoshop and Apple iTunes software. The portfolio will contain
a resume, bio, pictures, company logo, business card, Webpage location and
musical examples.
- Students will use IntuitÕs Quicken software to pay bills, balance a checkbook
and create graphs and pie charts detailing income and expenditures.
- Students will create, convert, import and export music documents uisng
MIDI files created with Apple QuicTtime, Digidesign Pro Tools software, Coda
Music Finale software and Sibelius Software.
- Students will print music and create PDF and HTML documents by importing
MIDI files into Finale and Sibelius software.
- Students will create a webpage using Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Word and
Macromedia Dreamweaver software. Students will prepare the page in Microsoft
Word and convert the file into an html document. The newly created html file
will be imported into Dreamweaver and viewed in Internet Explorer.
- Students will search for Internet providers who sell domain names and web-
hosting. Students will prepare a web-hosting budget using Microsoft Excel.
- Students will create a web-based shopping cart using PayPal.
- Students will compile an e-mail distribution list and define groups using
AppleÕs Mail software and Microsoft Entourage software. This database will
contain the names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses of business
partners and consumers for use as a marketing tool in their respective enterprises.
- Students will explore leadership techniques, tax implications and legal
issues related to hiring and firing personnel.
- Students will explore CD production costs.
- Students will explore the costs associated with barcodes necessary for
tracking music sales via Sound Scan.
- Students will research all music publications responsible for tracking
airplay, tours and product sales including Billboard and Records and Radio
amongst others.
- Students will explore emerging technologies and changes in music industry
laws and trends.
- Students will track and study any changes in U.S. and global intellectual
property law.
- Student teams will present information to the rest of the class using Internet
based and PowerPoint generated multi-media presentations.
