Course Competencies

MUM 2703 Course description:

This course will provide an overview, and hands-on experience, with a wide variety of computer-based music technology and cross-platform software applications used within the Music Business environment. Software studies include Microsoft Word (word-processing), Microsoft Excel (spreadsheet), Microsoft PowerPoint (presentation), and Adobe Photoshop (scanning, photo touch-up). Students will present projects in class.

Pre-requisite: Basic computer experience with the Macintosh and/or Windows 95 operating systems. Special fee. (6 hr. lab)

 

Course competencies:

  1. Students will update their professional resume prepared on Microsoft Word and convert the resume into PDF and HTML formats for distribution via e-mail and Internet.
  2. Students will create an electronic resume and biography including images, hyperlinks, audio and video files.
  3. Students will create a professional business card and find economical ways and providers capable of reproducing these business cards.
  4. Students will be introduced to Blue Tooth technology and learn to transfer electronic business cards via Blue Tooth capable cellular telephones and PDA devices.
  5. Students will create invoices using Microsoft Word and Excel. Invoices shall include company logos.
  6. Students will use IntuitÕs Quicken software to pay bills, balance a checkbook and create graphs and pie charts detailing income and expenditures.
  7. Students will design a business logo, for Trademark purposes, using Adobe Photoshop.
  8. Students will design and create a business card using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works and Adobe Photoshop.
  9. Students will scan a picture to create a professional headshot with contact information included using Adobe Photoshop.
  10. Students will convert images into various file formats including but not limited to tiff, jpeg and pict. Students will learn to resize, edit, copy and paste these files unto various documents.
  11. Students will create a digital presentation using AppleÕs iPicture and iMovie software.
  12. Students will create a digital presentation using Microsoft Powerpoint.
  13. Students will create a promotional flyer or advertisement using Photoshop.
  14. Students will convert AIFF files to mp3 and AAC format using AppleÕs iTunes software. Students will learn to use the iTunes on-line database in order to catalog their music and will also learn to reduce the size of the imported file in order to save space on hard drives and facilitate digital transport of data for personal use only.
  15. Students will download drum loops and import them into an Apple GarageBand software or Digidesign Pro Tools software file. Students will learn to edit, copy and paste loops in order to create a complete drum performance using loops.
  16. Students will create an artist, manager or producer portfolio using Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop and Apple iTunes software. The portfolio will contain a resume, bio, pictures, company logo, business card, Webpage location and musical examples.
  17. Students will import and export MIDI files using Digidesign Pro Tools software, Coda Music Finale software and Sibelius Software.
  18. Students will print music and create PDF documents by importing MIDI files into Finale and Sibelius software.
  19. Students will create a webpage using Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Word and Macromedia Dreamweaver software. Students will prepare the page in Microsoft Word and convert the file into an html document. The newly created html file will be imported into Dreamweaver and viewed in Internet Explorer.
  20. Students will search for Internet providers who sell domain names and web-hosting. Students will prepare a web-hosting budget using Microsoft Excel.
  21. Create a web-based shopping cart using PayPal.
  22. Create an e-mail distribution list and groups using AppleÕs Mail software and Microsoft Entourage software.
  23. Create a database containing the names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses of a fan base using FileMaker Pro software.
  24. Students will create a corporate date band repertoire sheet for various events, clients and population demographics.
